First of, I'm glad people think that old ETS2 & ATS Studio were awesome. They really were. I also think user interface looked way better than it does now. So... why did I decide to dump them and start completely from scratch?

E2S was made in a time when only ETS2 existed - in October 2013. There was no ATS, and also the game was not updated as often as it is now. Only a couple of DLCs existed... At that time, I also had way less development experience. All of that combined meant that the code behind the app was very rigid and oriented towards a specific task. It was convoluted, and it really was s PITA to update. I struggled for years to keep it updated and in line with ETS2 (and later on, with ATS). At one point, the game changes were so big, that it became impossible to update the apps. On top of that, the user interface elements that we used to design the app became obsolete as well, and it was time to pull the plug.

At this point, I can't even properly load the old source code in my Visual Studio. This effectively means that I cannot update the old apps - even if I wanted.

I also understand that Mods Studio 2 can annoy you at times. There's bugs, some features are missing, some things are different from what they were in the old apps... I'll do my best to fix bugs and develop missing features. But for some things, you'll have to put a little bit of effort and get used to the new way of doing things. I release MS2 updates almost on a monthly basis now. Things will improve - that's a prommise!
I hope you understand now why MS2 replaced the good ol' ETS2 and ATS studio.Marin Malnarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12164590973052924670noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385003938572466491.post-83571601194966513782019-12-09T02:19:00.002-08:002019-12-09T02:19:52.367-08:00Watch MS2 development live stream on Twitch

I've been getting a lot of questions lately about Mods Studio 2, what is it, and how it's related to ETS2 and ATS Studio.

In Short - Mods Studio 2 is the successor of ETS2 and ATS Studio.

In 2013 we released ETS2 Studio. In 2016 we released ATS Studio. At that point, we came up with a name "Mods Studio" which was used to reference both ETS2 and ATS studio at the same time, although at that time, they were two separate apps.

Now, we have Mods Studio 2 - it's purpose is to replace both ETS2 and ATS Studio, as the new app can make mods for both games (and more!).

Also, I must point out that there will be no updates for our older apps, and that there is no more support available for them. We are now pushing hard to update MS2 regularly, and that we'll bring it to the level of old E2S.

So, if you've missed it - grab the newest Mods Studio 2 from the official website! (released today)

Let's begin by taking a stroll trough our old releases...

The first publicly available version was numbered <span style="background-color: #fefefe; color: #0a0a0a; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">v.0.3. and it was released on October 6th, 2013.

Main window

Main window of the app was a MDI form with only a couple of options: File, Tools and About. I'm still a fan of old-school MDI windows, and still think this was probably the best design that we ever had.

SCS Archive Extractor

SCS archive extractor was just a simple user interface that used SCS Software's own extractor command line tool to do the work.

Before E2S, most modding tutorials required use of Hex editors to edit the TOBJ files. Not to mention, the method of padding file and similar practices of the time...

SCS Color Calculator

A simple two-way tool to convert between SCS and RGB color spaces.

Main tools (Mod projects)

This was the bread and butter of E2S: Standalone trailers tool and Truck Skin tool. Initial version had only the trailers tool and only 2 trailers at that. That's actually why I made E2S: I was not happy with 'replacement' trailer skins as I believe mods should add content and not replace it. On the other hand, making standalone trailers was a painstaking process.

Two main project options (v.0.4)

Two main types of projects in v.0.4 - the idea was to add more with each release. Unfortunately, when we created a brand "new" UI (around v.0.5.0.6, I think) - we limited ourselves to these two + variable editor. In retrospect, a bad move.

Trailer tool offered stock SCS trailer types, and a list of standard SCS companies to deliver cargo from/to. Skins were DDS in the first version, but soon we offered option to use PNG, as many of our users didn't have tools to edit DDS images. Later versions had options to edit the list of trailers, companies...
Truck skin tool offered all SCS trucks and 50keda's 2009 Scania R, the most popular mod truck of the time. (Later, we added option to add mod trucks). All of the tools featured validation (Right side of the window), that showed the user what they are missing for a working mod. I still am proud of the design and functionality of our first ETS2 Studio.

Tech

First E2S was built using Visual Studio and was coded in C#. All of the UI was done in Windows Forms, and as the title says - it was Windows only. We used some external libraries to convert PNG to DDS, zip/unzip files and such. Also, we used SCS Software's own tools (extractor), and some base files for the trailers.

Next post will deal with the Mods Studio version that most of you know and have used for a long time, and after that, we'll get into the under the hood things of the upcoming Mods Studio 2.0.

So, folks, stay tuned!

So, development of brand new Mods Studio is just about to start...

For the last couple of years, I've been working on a game, together with my wife. Yesterday, we finally submitted the game build for release. It's coming out on Steam on August 1st. For anyone interested, here's a little video:

Here's the Munchies Steam store page

So, with this project finished, I finally have time to make a new Mods Studio version. There are a lot of ideas flying around as what and how it should be made. One thing is for sure - it will be made in small steps. First step is to create a decent code base for the project. Second, we'll build the specific mod tools on that.

As we all know, SCS is building a complete new trailer system (where you can own and modify your trailers). That's going to be a new challenge for us - figuring out the new system and finding a way to reproduce the trailers.

Another challenge is to make it work on all platforms: Windows, MacOS and Linux. The question here is, is the time and effort justifiable, since only 3% of players don't use Windows.

Going open source with the project will also be a challenge, sine I never coordinated such a project.

In any case, I'm hyped about the new Mods Studio project. I guess I needed some time off to get the spark back. :) See you soon with more news about the development.

Hello friends!

We're happy to announce a new version of ETS2 Studio. This version is named Caddellac - a tribute to our resident developer and green meanie - Cadde. At the same time, we're implying that our tool is the Cadillac of ETS2 tools. :)

Last minute surprise!

In the release notes for the public beta, we have announced that the new Mod Editor is the main new feature of this version. But, just hours ago, we have added three new trailers and also upgraded our Mod Merge tool.

Famous last words

I am truly grateful to all people who supported us so far, either by contributing to the project with their work, or with donations. You guys keep this project moving. In less than a month, a new game by SCS Software is coming out: American Truck Simulator. If you have missed it - you can get a free DLC for it just by following it on Steam. Our big wish is to create a similar mod tool for the new game as well. At the same time, we want to continue development of new features for E2S as well...
Last version of E2S was downloaded over 26000 times in just over three months, so we have a lot of users that are expecting new features and updates. :) It looks like interesting times are coming.

I would like to finish this post by thanking Cadde for his work on this latest version of E2S. Without his coding skills I would not be able to make such a great release! Also, I want to thank Matdom1988 (MDModding) and SiSL for the content they created for this release. Lastly, I want to thank all the users on our forums for testing beta releases and providing valuable feedback to us.

If I forgot anyone, I apologize. My brain cells are running on low at the moment. :) I promise I'll make up for it.

Head over to the Download page to get your fresh copy of E2S! :)

P.S.

More information about new features will be posted in the following days. :)Marin Malnarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12164590973052924670noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385003938572466491.post-50511712329252665572016-01-05T10:58:00.003-08:002016-01-05T10:58:30.386-08:00Public beta of ETS2 Studio 0.7 availableHello! Howdy partners!

We're getting better at this! This time, it took us only four months to come up with a new version. And, what a version it is! To see what we have added in V.0.6.2, take a look at the post that announced the release of the beta version.

Since the beta, there was a couple of fixes and tweaks:

New trailer: Aerodynamic by Matdom1988

Fixed missing trailer shadows in freight market

Fixed merge issues with CoolLiner trailer

Added right-click menu in cargo editor with option to select all companies

Fixed bug with truck template editor - now it works with Mercedes Antos by D3S Design

Fixed bug with wrong cabin internal name for Scania T by RJL

Added trailer skin templates in a folder named "Templates"

... and some other minor fixes ...

So, where can you find this new version of ETS2 Studio?

As always: on our Downloads page!

Don't forget - one of the major features of this release is the possibility to add your own trailers to the application. To read a bit more about the whole (quite complicated) process, take a look at the blog post where we describe the nuts and bolts of our trailer template system.

The last version of ETS2 Studio (v0.6.1.8) generated 26005 downloads. That's a staggering number that took us by surprise. Of course, we want to know what our users think, and that's why we have prepared a little...

ETS2 Studio Poll

It's a 10 question poll that will give us valuable insight into what you think about our little application. We would very much appreciate if you could spare some time and answer the questions. The poll is, of course, completely anonymous.

Of course, feel free to visit our or SCS forums if you ever need any help with the use of E2S.

Have fun! :)
This feature is actually intended for experienced modders who know how trailers are created and who know their way around Blender. For the moment, trailer templates are compatible with 50keda's Blender2SCS plugin. In the future, we'll test how things work with SCS Software's Blender Tools as well.

If you take a look at the folder structure of the application, you'll see that we have a couple of additional folders:

data\trailers\default
data\trailers\templates
data\trailers\includes\traffic
data\trailers\includes\trailer

Default folder is meant to hold trailer templates that we provide with the application. Templates folder is meant to hold templates that users add to the application. Includes folder holds the files that are used to include the trailers and traffic (AI) trailers to the game.

If you take a look at the structure of a template, you'll notice that it's now structured like the exported trailer mod would be structured. It has the same file and folder structure, with the exception of some files and folders containing variables in their names.

Variables like:

{{InternalName}}
{{Mass}}

Application replaces these placeholders with proper values when exporting mod.
Also, the same variables are found in the sii files that are now a part of the template. Before, the application was creating these files at export, but now it just takes them from the template. This way, everyone can tune their templates however they wish.

One of the most important elements of the template is the Search String. This is the part of the internal paths in PMD files, TOBJ files (...) that needs to be replaced with the new trailer Internal Name. Usually, the Search String matches the folder name where you originally exported the trailer with Blender. If unsure, you can always open some of the MAT files with a text editor and check the folder name in them.

One of the material files in a trailer template mod has a line like this:

texture[0] : "/vehicle/trailer_eu/coolln/textures/cool_liner.tobj"

Notice the coolln in the path. That is the Search String.

Of course, all PMD files should be exported from blender to the same folder, together with all other necessary files (materials, textures, etc...).

I think that's basically it. Take a look, try it out, and let me know what you think. :)
And, of course - if you need more info - just ask.Marin Malnarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12164590973052924670noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385003938572466491.post-4728185967899430112015-08-12T03:41:00.000-07:002015-08-12T03:41:23.896-07:00New ETS2 Studio public beta available (v0.6.2.5)My fellow geeks! This one is named "Majestic R.I.P." to honor the passing of the last imaginary brand from this world... or, better yet - ETS2 world.

The list contains company name, company internal name (folder name), and cargo direction. io means in and out, while i stands for in. Marina is a bit weird, since there's no in or out folders in the DLC definition files. All these companies should show up in the next version of ETS2 Studio, but untill than, you can add them manually using our Company Template Editor in E2S options.
Here's some good news - I'll add it really soon. In fact, the plan is to add it over the weekend, with a couple of other goodies.

But, if you're a bit impatient, you can always add it using our truck template editor.

Here's the data you need:

You need to correctly enter the internal name, and internal names of cab variants.

Truck internal name:
mercedes.actros2014

Cab internal names:
bigspace
gigaspace
streamspace

And that's basically it. :)

P.S.

Looking into download data for current (0.6.1.8) version of E2S, I have seen that more people decided to use Uploaded.net link over the Dropbox one. Thank you for that! :) I appreciate it!

P.P.S.

Don't forget to post your new Actros skins to ETS2Addons web site :)Marin Malnarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12164590973052924670noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385003938572466491.post-70716528349227887132015-05-08T13:09:00.000-07:002015-05-08T13:09:57.435-07:00ETS2 Studio V 0.6.1.8 Released

Dear ETS2 Studio users,

it's been a while since we released ETS2 Studio v.0.6.0.7. For the interested, it was exactly 398 days ago. That's 1 year, 1 month and 2 days ago. Too long, to be honest. We were on the verge of dropping the whole project, but seeing the enthusiasm of the awesome ETS2 comunity, we managed to push on and find new strength to work on this.

You can read more on what was added, changed and fixed in our last blog post where we announced the release of the public beta. Releasing a public beta was a first for us, and it seems to be a success. At least, judging by the low number of bugs reported. To be completely honest, due to lack of time and proper gear, this was the only way E2S could get tested. We'll continue this practice for all our future releases.

So, what holds the future for ETS2 Studio?

Soon after this release we plan to release a quick update of the application. It will probably be numbered as 0.6.2 and it will contain new companies that were released in the Scandinavia DLC, new Actros that's about to be released in the 1.18 beta, and new trailers by Matdom.

After that, the plan is to start working on a bigger update - a trailer database editor, so you'll be able to import trucks like you can trucks and companies. Also, a 3D preview is in the works already as is a nice tool for modders, wich I'll keep a secret for now.

So, yes, there's a future for ETS2 Studio, and one day, ATS studio.

Enjoy the release, and let us know what you think about it on our forum! :)

A couple of days ago, 50keda released his awesome DAF XF by 50k on SCS Forums.

Here's an image, so you can see what I'm talking about ;-)

With exceptional mod quality, and superb attention to detail - 50keda made sure this truck will become as legendary as his Scania R2008. And, that means that a lot of people will want to skin this DAF.

Latest release of ETS2 Studio allows users to add any mod truck to the application's database. So, we have tried importing this DAF to our application, just to make sure everything works fine... well. It doesn't. :) To be hones, we would be surprised if anything that we build works like intended. :)

Thankfully, there are no serious errors. Our application just can't properly read cabin names for this truck. And, that's an easy fix. We have prepared simple instructions, so read on.

Open up your ETS2 Studio settings dialog. (Application menu -> Options)

Select 'Truck Database' tab and click 'Add truck'

Click 'Load from mod' and open 50keda's DAF mod. (Default file name is 50k_DAF_XF_v1.scs)

The application should load data like this:
(Click here for a bigger image - opens in a new window)

Change the truck name to: DAF XF

Enter author name: 50Keda

If you wish, select a preview image.

This is the important part: Edit internal names for all cab variants. Click on the cab variant internal name that you wish to edit, and enter these values:

Space: space_cab

Space with painted mask: space_cab_p

Space Cab Plus: s_cab_plus

Space with Side spoiler: s_cab_plus1

Space with Side spoiler & painted mask: s_cab_plus1p

Space Cab Plus with painted mask: s_cab_plus_p

Super Space: super_s_cab

Super Space with painted mask: super_s_cabp

Your Truck Template Editor window should now look something like this:
(Click here for a bigger image - opens in a new window)

Click 'Save Truck Template' and you're done.

If you completed the ten above steps successfully, when you return to the Truck Skin Editor, you'll see something like this:

And, on the Skin Properties tab, you'll see all cab variants like this:

Sorry for the inconvenience. We'll fix this little bug in the next version of E2S. It will load truck cab names automatically like it should.

Have fun!Marin Malnarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12164590973052924670noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5385003938572466491.post-86690091823882909392014-04-15T13:02:00.000-07:002014-04-15T13:02:02.895-07:00Truck Template Editor bug - database.wtt file missingSorry guys, but we forgot to include some folders and files into the installation package. That's why you're getting an error when trying to add a custom mod truck to the application.

We'll fix this error with the next release of E2S, but until then - here's a quick fix:

Go to your E2S installation directory, and open the <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">\data\trucks folder.
In there, create a folder named <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">templates .

That should solve your problems, and you should be able to add mod trucks to ETS2 Studio.

Thank you all for reporting the bug, and sorry for any inconvenience.
